The FMGS guides the aircraft to the target values of Speed, Heading, Altitude etc, using the guidance mode selected by the flight drew. The mode enraged is displayed in the FMA of the PFD.

AP/FD modes and the A/T modes

 

When the AP or F/D engage in certain vertical modes, the FMGS will automatically engage the Auto Thrust into an associated mode as follows :

AP F/D mode

A/T mode

V/S or FPA

G/S * , G/S

FINAL, FINAL APP

The flight crew may engage a selected mode at any time by pulling the corresponding FCU knob.

The managed modes are engaged automatically after take off, if they had been previously armed. In general managed modes are armed by pushing on the appropriate FCU knob.
